No one wants to join the journey of breast cancer but if this Providence comes your way, the medical team you choose is of utmost importance. I can not recommend Dr. Chagares and his staff highly enough from my experience with them. I had a breast lumpectomy. I was very scared of both the surgery and what the biopsy would show. Dr. Chagares and his staff are second to none! He listened to all of my questions and concerns and when I told him I really didn’t like going in the MRI tube he suggested an ultrasound. I am always hesitant to give reviews regarding my experiences with medical procedures. Hernia surgery, as minor as some medical websites may declare it to be, is still surgery. Everyone heals differently as every body is different. From predispositions to self-care post-surgery, how my body responds to a procedure will vary from others. So, I would never want to give anyone reading a review or researching practitioners certain expectations about how their body may handle a specific procedure, how they might heal and so on. But, what I can assure anyone contemplating hernia surgery is that Dr. Chagares is the best!

I had been putting off hernia surgery for several years. I am a researcher by nature and after scrutinizing practitioners throughout New Jersey, I decided to schedule an appointment to consult with Dr. Chagares. The office staff, who I think are almost as important as the practitioner, were great from start to finish. They are professional, organized and responsive. After consulting with Dr. Chagares I felt assured that it was time to go through with the surgery.

Dr. Chagares is an incredibly talented surgeon AND he has an affable personality and fun sense of humor. I mean, how much fun can hernias be, right? But, he made me laugh and put me at ease. He is super approachable and I felt like I could ask him anything. Even if it was something potentially embarrassing or what I felt was a silly question, he never made me feel uncomfortable or that anything was off limits. I think that is so important when choosing a practitioner.

The surgery itself was unremarkable, and in the world of medicine that is a good thing! If I had to describe it in one word that word would be “efficient”. He is truly an expert and the result was perfect. Post-surgery, if I had a difficult day during the immediate week of recovery, or if there was something I was concerned about, Dr. Chagares was responsive and reassured me that everything was fine. And everything was.

Overall, I had an extremely positive experience with Dr. Chagares and his staff. I will be seeing him again for another procedure in the future and would never hesitate to recommend him to my family and friends.

During my initial consultation Dr. Chagares performed a thorough examination, explained the repair procedure, encouraged questions and patiently addressed all my concerns. Last year I found myself knelt over in the worst pain of my life. I was having a gall bladder attack. I was rushed to the ER where I was advised to follow up with a general surgeon. I made an appointment with Dr. Stephen Chagares. He came highly recommended by the hospital and a number of friends who either had a family member or they used him themselves for gall bladder surgeries. After having an initial consult I felt so at ease that I was going to be in amazing hands. I brought my sonogram from the emergency room and Dr. Chagares reviewed all the details that the procedure would entail. He explained exactly what he was going to do, the recovery and why it was a good idea to remove the gall bladder. I made my surgical appointment that day with his kind and caring staff and knew I was in the best hands possible.

Fast forward to my surgery day, I was the first case in the AM at Riverview Hospital. Dr. Chagares came to meet me and review what we planned on doing as well as how I would feel postoperatively. I went into the OR and was asleep in minutes. I woke up in recovery and felt great. I heard so many negative comments online about gas pains in your stomach and shoulders that I was afraid. I felt great relatively speaking. The anesthesia needed to wear off and a little abdominal discomfort but nothing like I expected or heard about online.

Dr. Chagares is a fantastic surgeon, who goes above and beyond for his patients. . His kindness, professionalism and intelligence shines through and it is with 100% certainty that I would recommend Dr. Chagares.

I recently had a mammography and breast ultrasound. My doctor told me I needed to see a surgeon. I called Dr. Chagares’ office and they got me in right away. Dr. Chagares explained that I needed to have a biopsy and I was so scared. Luckily, my biopsy was negative and I am back to needing routine care. I wanted to drop you and your staff a personal note to tell you how happy I have been dealing with you and your office.

I had contacted you in early April to discuss an umbilical hernia that needed repair. You spent a considerable amount of time answering my many questions, well beyond my expectations that unfortunately do not exist today in most doctor’s offices. You alleviated my concerns regarding anesthesia and set my expectations regarding before, during and after surgery. On the day of my surgery, you stopped by and with your natural smile let me know that “it’s going to be great”. The surgical center staff and anesthesiologist were friendly, professional and did a great job as well. Approximately four days after surgery I was confused/concerned as to how my umbilical area looked and the person I spoke with in your office had me send you a picture of the area. To my surprise, they called me back after about an hour (@ 8:30 PM) and indicated that you felt it looked fine but invited me into the office the next day to alleviate my concerns. The next day you took me as your first appointment, checked the area and gave me the thumbs up. Yesterday was my three-week post-surgical appointment and you again took your time with me and answered my questions.

Regarding your staff, your office is an anomaly. When I call your office, someone actually answers the phone – no 10-choice voice attendant. If I email or leave a voice mail for your office, they actually respond. When I am in the office, everyone is friendly and do not look like they would rather be having a root canal. Lastly, I have never waited more than five minutes to be seen. In an age where doctors are being squeezed by insurance companies, forcing them to double and triple book, where wait times exceed 30 minutes, where office staff have been trimmed or quality staff cannot be found – your office is the unicorn. Please thank everyone in your office and let them know that this patient is very thankful.

Here is my only piece of advice – DON’T CHANGE ANYTHING.
